First Time Garage Door Buyer?

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Misc. Garage Door Information in Plano, TX

Buying a garage door/opener is like buying a project, though most people don’t look at it this way. investing wisely in this project that an individual will only partake in, once or twice in a lifetime on an average; will save you time and money now and for the long run…. let’s get started with some brief buyers q & a’s that make the process a little simpler:

Q. What kind of door/opener should I get?

A. What kind of door/opener do you currently have? Do you like it or are you looking to change it up a little bit? Does the current door meet standards, needs and functions of your demand? Based on your answers to these questions you will be able to move forward quickly.

Q. Why should I get a new garage door/opener?

A. If your garage door/opener is damaged beyond repair (whether by natural or human cause), you should probably get a new one. Maybe you’re selling your home and want increase the value of it by installing a new garage door or garage door opener.

Q. What factors should I consider when purchasing a new door?

A. When buying a door always consider cost, size, material, insulation levels and decorative elements; not to mention the overall purpose for usage of the garage. Also consider the type of weather exposure your garage door will have to survive, and any accessibility needs. Also, don’t forget to consider the warranty!

Q. What are the benefits of getting a new garage door/opener?

A. Getting a new door can improve the appearance of your home, increase value of the home, result in less maintenance to your home and personal property by adding security and aiding in insulation to your door and overall home(like a bedroom that sits above the garage) it.  Getting a new opener can improve functionality and support to your door.

Q. I am a visual and hands on person. Where can I go to see or touch my purchase, before I actual buy it?

A. There are retailers that provide opportunity for you to come in a showroom and view samples or models of most types of doors and openers available. some folks like to drive around the neighborhood and look at what others have to get a feel of what they may like… try to learn as much as you can because the more you learn about the upkeep of the garage door and opener, the more money you can save in the long run as well.

Q. What is your budget for this project? How can you save cost?

A. Try to stick you your budget as much as you can, with the least amount of out of pocket cost as possible. Chances are that you can save more on a garage door/opener bundle. Always see what your options are. Maybe you can purchase one at a time if you budget does not allow…..get a quote from your dealer and ask how long the quote/estimate is good for.

Projects don’t have to be a big hassle. They have actually be a lot of fun with the right sources and guides…you may even consider yourself to be garage door and opener knowledge certified when you’re done!  The more you know before you buy, the better off you will be in the long run!

Genie and Liftmaster Couplers

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Misc. Garage Door Information in Plano, TX

Garage Door Opener Couplers

Couplers

The coupling is a rubber sleeve that connects the motor unit sprocket to the rail sprocket. Sometimes this can become worn and damaged and needs to be replaced. On most Genie screw drive openers the motor shaft is connected to the rail screw with a coupler. This allows the motor to turn the screw, which moves the trolley to open and close the garage door. Sometimes the coupler wears out and the motor will turn, but the screw doesn’t turn. As a result the door does not open nor close.

The coupler is used for attaching the screw of Genie screw drive rail to the motor head. This coupler is made to break away if the door hits a hard obstruction, thereby protecting the motor. If the motor of the screw drive Genie runs, but the screw is not turning, this coupler needs replaced. For Genie’s with split-rail screw drives, make sure you are looking at the rail screw nearest to the motor to determine the need for replacement. A grinding noise coming from your screw drive Genie or Overhead probably means you need to replace your coupler.

Plano Overhead Garage Door offers three types of couplers.

(1) Genie old version-which is grey color and is approximately ¾ inch wide and 7/8” tall.

(2) Genie new version-which is silver in color and is approximately ¾ inch wide and 1 inch tall.

(3) LiftMaster version-which is approximately 1 ½ inch wide and 1 1/8 inch tall.

Call or stop by the showroom for your coupling needs today.

Garage Door Lubrication

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Misc. Garage Door Information in Plano, TX

If you want a garage door to continue to run as smoothly and quietly as possible, it is very important to perform adequate maintenance. A garage door should be lubricated at the least once a year. With all the dust, wind and water exposure that it has to with stand; it is easy understand why. But what type of lubrication should be used?

WD40 Door Lube

Plano Overhead Garage Door offers two types of lubrication in its showroom. The 3-in-1 garage door lube is a high performance lubrication with a quick dry no mess formula that prevents rusting.  Our technicians use this lubricant on hinges, springs, and any moving part that doesnt have steel ball-bearings such as bearing plates and the inside of the rollers.

Lubriplate

Lubriplate is a multi-purpose lithium grease with a thicker viscosity that prevents wear and corrosion. Either lubricant comes highly recommended and both have been used by our technicians for many years.  Lubriplate is ideal for screw driven garage door openers to dampen the sound it makes as the screw inside the rail spins at high revolution.  You can use lubriplate on ball-bearings, but remember that a little goes a long ways!

Pick up can or tube today at our showroom and start protecting the single largest moving part in your home!  Click here to learn more about servicing garage doors, and what we offer during our services.

Our Story: History of Plano Overhead Garage Door

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in About Our Garage Door Company in Plano, TX

IMG_1129

After working in a machine shop for three years, in 1977 I set out to find an outdoor job in construction. Hollywood Door in Dallas was hiring subcontractors for their installations. There I learned to install Genie garage door openers, attic stairways, and service residential garage doors. I found the installation of Genie openers most interesting and starting contracting to Forbis Electronic.  After contracting around Dallas and even doing some commercial garage door repair in Austin; I decided it was time to stop contracting to others and manage my own business.

We started out picking up odd jobs, and marketing using word-of-mouth. Over the next few years, we went from struggling to find work, to busy enough to run a fairly consistent schedule with my work truck staying busy most of the time.

In 1984 I took a leap of faith and placed two dollar bill sized ads in red bold print in the GTE Plano directory, using the company name “Plano Door Service”.  The cost was 400 per month and my competitors said I was crazy for even thinking about it.  Working from the living area in our West Plano home we offered same day service at reasonable rates. Within three months of placing the ad, we hired our first employee.  We continued to work out of our home office until 1990; during which we had an assortment of different small to medium size warehouses to store scrap materials.

In 1990, we took the next step and incorporated all of our existing customer base into one company- Plano Overhead, Inc.  We also combined our office and warehouse to our first retail location at 801 Jupiter Rd near Plano Parkway & Jupiter Rd. We constructed walls out of garage door panels to create an office that allowed customers to see our steel doors and electric openers- while creating working environment as well. This location served us well as we had significant growth over the next ten years.

In 2000 we moved to 1111 Jupiter Rd. just north of our old location. It was a much nicer showroom with sufficient office and warehouse space. We grew large enough to hire secretaries and a few additional installers.  My son, Nick, also joined us as an installer in 2008 after graduating from Texas A&M University.  Nick started as an installer learning the business as I did, from the ground up.  He worked as an installer for a few years, was Service Manager for about a year, then General Manager for 3 years, and has now been promoted to CEO since 2016.  After doing two five year leases the landlord went way up on our projected rent for the next five years and we decided to take yet another leap of faith.  We decided that we would attempt to find a location that had highway visibility- at warehouse prices.  To do this, we would actually have to separate our retail space from our warehouse space.  Fortunately, we were able to find two locations within a mile of one another that was around the same budget as before- but with higher visibility at one location, and more storage at the other.  We were up for the challenge!

In 2016, we were able to bring my other son on board to serve as the CFO.  He also attended Texas A&M University and lived with my other son, Nick, for a few years.  Nobody could be more excited than my other son to have him on board as he helps to bear the weight of continuous growth and transformation of our company.  As we transition our business to the next generation, we are confident that our two sons will take our company to heights we never thought possible- while maintaining the integrity, ethics, and values that have always been the backbone of our company.
